Panel Introduction by Hazel Clark

This panel brings together perspectives on fashion curation, as a form of contemporary communication and critique of fashion, and explores its role relative to art, culture, consumption, globalization, identity, performance and market. With expert speakers from Europe, the United States, Australia, and China, the panel presents the latest scholarship on the subject of curating fashion, seen in a global context.

Fashion curation is a multifaceted activity, which highlights an informed and collaborative practice, and has varied and interesting practical, conceptual and intellectual roots. We feature in this panel curating as a way of thinking, researching and analyzing fashion critically and as a means to raise aesthetic, social, political and philosophical questions. The speakers address fashion curation as a critical practice, a way of producing knowledge and a unique opportunity to visualize, display, and disseminate fashion research in an accessible format. They share their substantial knowledge, thoughts and experiences of the curation of fashion in museums and gallery spaces, as well as discussing interfaces with art, commerce and the fashion brand. Fashion curation is presented as a collaborative activity, and I am very pleased therefore to introduce five speakers, most of whom I have worked with closely.
